The Spyker C8 is one of the most exclusive cars on the planet. Fewer than 100 have been delivered to the United States since production began in 2000, rendering the $210,000 Dutch-built sports car scarcer than the Ferrari Enzo. And while the C8 meets all of the requirements to compete with some of the world’s best exotic sports cars, it is missing one luxury appointment that comes standard even on many of today’s cheapest economy cars: an audio system.
"Spyker didn’t offer a stereo option until this year, but every owner wants one," says Elie Rothstein, owner of Al & Ed’s Autosound in West Hollywood, who recently outfitted a Spyker for Scottsdale, Ariz.–based Dan Erickson. "I own three Spykers, and this one has the best-sounding audio system by far," Erickson says. "It was definitely worth spending the money to have it done right."
Spyker provided the California-based installation shop with the blueprints to the car, and the result is a system that looks like it was built and designed at the factory. But it was not an easy process. "There were over 100 pages of information from Holland," says Rothstein. "But we carefully took apart the whole interior and found enough space to make it work."
With a small 600-watt Alpine PDX amplifier ($699) powering a pair of shallow French-made Focal 6.5-inch speakers—each with a tweeter and mid-range driver—($600 per pair), and an ultraslim Pioneer 12-inch subwoofer ($199) in front of the passenger’s-side firewall, the system is capable of creating more than 100 decibels of sound. This allows Erickson to listen to music with the top off—even when the car’s Audi-sourced 4.2-liter V-8 engine is blaring at its 7,200 rpm redline. Equally impressive is the 7-inch Kenwood touchscreen head unit ($2,000), which offers AM/FM and satellite radio, CD and DVD playback, iPod connectivity, and
GPS navigation.
"There was no existing wiring, so we put in Monster Cable for the speaker, power, and ground wires," Rothstein says. "We also added a reverse back-up camera, so there is a color display screen when the owner puts the vehicle in reverse—but that was just for fun."
