Room Tour: White Space

"I believe that design can evoke real feelings in human beings," says French designer Jean-Marie Massaud, who in 2005 unveiled his fantastical and futuristic bathroom concept for Axor, Hansgrohe’s high-end brand, at the International Furniture Fair in Milan. His idea, then called WaterDream, is now a reality in the guise of the Axor Massaud line of fixtures and accessories, a sleek and sinuous collection inspired by that initial rendering.

Massaud’s radical landscape is designed to be a complete sensory experience: A crackling wood fire is housed within a horizontal aperture that runs the length of the 75-inch-long tub, and a freestanding tub filler with a built-in shelf releases water from high above and is meant to evoke the sound of a mountain stream, while a bulbous dip in the ceiling overhead completes the dreamlike space. The prevailing notion, Massaud says, "is about feeling good, physically and mentally."
