Last year, the luxury bathroom retailer Czech & Speake—which opened its first store on London’s tony Jermyn Street in 1979—asked architect David Chipperfield to design a line of modern fixtures. Chipperfield, known for his work on museums and high-end hotels, finds inspiration in "using classic materials, such as travertine and polished chrome, in a modern way," he says, adding that his particular aesthetic is all about "fresh form, soft in profile with clear lines."

Building from this idea, he created the DCA line, an assemblage of sleek, straightforward pieces that resonated so completely with Czech & Speake’s founder, Frank Sawkins, that Sawkins made a complementary line of accessories in brass and cobalt-blue glass called FSD. The vibrant, handblown pieces work in concert with Chipperfield’s assertive designs to promote a sense of refined minimalism.

Wishing to further illustrate the cooperative nature of the two lines, Sawkins then set out to portray the ultimate bathing sanctuary. He did so by combining iconic 20th-century pieces—a 1956 Mark Rothko painting entitled Orange and Red, an Arco floor light created by Achille Castiglioni in 1962, and the Jasper Morrison–designed Thinking Man’s Chair (1986)—and placing them in a formalized setting with a sleek fireplace and paneled walls. "We wanted to give a strong visual representation to elevate the status of our DCA/FSD fittings so they can be viewed as design classics in their own right," he says.
