Since its founding nearly 50 years ago, The Golden Door has long been heralded as the nation's first true luxury destination spa. With its Zen-influenced setting--modeled after classic Japanese gardens complete with courtyards, waterfalls, koi ponds and meditative shrines--The Golden Door remains true to the original vision of its legendary founder, Deborah Szekely.

The first-ever fitness spa noted for its ultra-high level of personal service and dedication to the balance of mind, body and spirit, Golden Door sits on 377 acres of rolling hills, 800 feet above sea level, just 40 minutes northeast of downtown San Diego. A limited number of guests is permitted to enjoy the vast facilities of The Door at any one time, to allow for an extremely peaceful and private environment. The Golden Door program is exclusively for women, with the exception of 10 weeks of each year set aside for Men-Only and Coed Weeks.

Accommodations are inspired by traditional Japanese Honjin Inns, clustered around lush garden courtyards and designed to welcome the weary traveler. Museum-quality Japanese art and antiques dot the property, further adding to its serene, elegant and plush ambience.

With a staff-to-guest ratio of 4-to-1 and a general manager who has been with the legendary spa since Day One, The Door ensures each guest enjoys an experience filled with rest and opportunity for renewal. Guests follow a personalized program of exercise, daily massage, meditation and beauty treatments created expressly for their needs and wishes. Week-long programs feature a customized mix of nutritional counseling, fitness activities and pampering spa treatments, including a daily choice of skin masques, facials and cleansing treatments, massage, aromatherapy, European-style deep-cleansing therapy, herbal wraps, body scrubs and more at no additional charge. Each stay at Golden Door is tailored to the guests' individual needs; no two guests' programs are ever alike.

While at The Door, guests can relax in three guest lounges, enjoy gourmet spa cuisine in the dining room, attend cooking classes or inspiring seminars, partake in candlelight labrynth meditation, or work-out in three exercise studios (plus the Dragon Tree Gym equipped with leading-edge Cybex equipment). Facilities also include two swimming pools; a lighted tennis court; a 1,100 square foot outdoor pavilion for yoga and Pilates; a Beauty Court surrounding a tranquil sand garden courtyard, plus a Bathhouse with steam room, sauna, showers and Swiss hoses; a fan-shaped therapy pool; and private rooms for body scrubs and lulling herbal wraps.
