In 1899, brothers Edward and Leonard McRoskey arrived in San Francisco with the patented mattress-making machine Leonard had invented. But after experiencing little success selling the machine, they decided to make mattresses themselves. More than 100 years later, McRoskey is a Bay Area institution with designs on expansion. The company has opened shops in Palo Alto and Los Angeles that carry its standard range of mattress sets—prices start at $1,600 and go to $3,700—and also take custom orders. Mattresses come in five grades of firmness, from “extra gentle” to “extra, extra firm.” Long a favorite of San Francisco’s interior designers, most of McRoskey’s business comes from repeat customers and word of mouth. That bodes well if you’re looking for a good night’s sleep.
