Furniture shaped like other products—boxing gloves and
baseball mitts, for instance—can be viewed in several ways. On the surface, such
a piece is a whimsical insight into its owner’s passions, but good design can
transcend novelty. “De Sede products are coveted collector’s items that
appreciate in value over time and are gaining considerable notoriety at the
important auctions,” says Michael Ladish, who co-owns the Modern Living showroom
in Los Angeles.
The DS-2878 boxing glove chair is a decidedly
playful design, but it nevertheless delivers on expectations of quality
construction and supple leather. It comes in right- and left-handed variants and
is priced from $9,800 to $12,900. It’s the next best thing to being ringside. (Click image to enlarge)
The Joe chair was named for baseball great Joe DiMaggio and was
designed for Poltronova in 1971. And while it’s a natural gift for the baseball
fan, it has enjoyed critical acclaim for its capability to respond and adapt to
a user’s weight and movement. The Joe chair is also available from Modern Living
for $6,600. (Click image to enlarge)
