The Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance was conceived about 20 years ago when a portion of the stylish Beverly Hills street was first closed down for the debut of the Ferrari 348 Spider. A combination of automotive artistry and high-end fashion, the event has become an annual Father’s Day tradition that now includes several vehicles displayed outside the area’s chic boutiques. "We hold the concours on Father’s Day, because we figure that cars have an element of fashion to which dads can relate," says event cochair Bruce Meyer. "It is a no-excuses day when Dad can take the time to enjoy his favorite pastime." Sponsored by the Rodeo Drive Committee, which consists of several of the street’s merchants, this year’s iteration—to be held on June 21—will feature around 100 cars and will highlight classic alternative-fuel vehicles, including steam, electric, and hybrid models. An array of contemporary exotics and historic hot rods, as well as the first production Shelby Cobra, is also expected to be on display. Members of the Rodeo Drive Committee will give several prizes, including the Mayor’s Award for Featured Theme and the Rodeo Drive Award for Best in Show. An award named after the late Svend Ingerslev, the store director for the Lladró boutique on Rodeo Drive, will be bestowed upon the car deemed most elegant by the committee. Free to the public, the concours is expected to draw tens of thousands of visitors.
