At Your Service: Hawaii Drive-O

Hawaii may soon achieve independence, and without seceding from the union. "We want to become energy independent," says Paul Gerstenberger, a self-described serial entrepreneur who owns Big Island Exotic Rentals and recently founded the Hawaii Clean Energy Corporation. "An ocean separates us from the rest of the world, but we have a super-abundant energy supply right here in the form of wind, solar, wave motion, geothermal—you name it." Gerstenberger’s latest company plans to harvest energy by building an ultra-clean 200-megawatt solar updraft tower. "That’s enough renewable energy to power the entire island without using any fossil fuel," he says. "It also prevents 900,000 tons of carbon from entering the atmosphere annually."

As a first step, Gerstenberger has started converting his exotic car rental fleet to run on ethanol. "Hawaii has an ample supply of sugarcane, which makes ethanol a viable energy alternative for our cars," he explains. "Better still, at 105 octane, E85 releases more power than the purest gasoline." As a result, the company’s ethanol-fueled Lam-borghini Gallardo produces more than 600 hp.

Partnered with the Mauna Kea Resort (www.maunakearesort.com), Big Island Exotic Car Rental’s Green Flash vacation package consists of five nights in one of two suites at the resort’s original Mauna Kea Beach Hotel (which was built by Laurance Rockefeller and sits on what the Vacation Channel calls the "best beach in the world"); the only ethanol-burning 600 hp Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 (Robb Report’s current Car of the Year) for transportation; and a week’s supply of ethanol. The itinerary also includes a round of golf at one of the "top 10 most beautiful golf courses," according to Golf Digest; games at one of the world’s "top 10 tennis facilities," per Tennis World; a helicopter tour of the island’s volcanoes; and an 11-course dinner prepared by chef Mark Monette of the Flagstaff House restaurant. Prices range from $20,000 to $30,000, depending upon the suite chosen.

"The whole world needs to take this global warming thing seriously," Gerstenberger says. "Green Flash is a way for sports car enthusiasts to set an example of what can be done, and have some fun in the process."
