Feature: LT Marks the Spot

Christian Gulliksen

April 1, 2004

The appellation “Mark” has a lengthy and erratic history at Lincoln. It debuted in 1956 with the launch of the Mark II when Continental was made a stand-alone marque. (This essentially lumped together the Lincoln Continentals built between 1940 and 1948 as the de facto Mark I.) Continental survived on its own through 1958 with the Mark III before being reabsorbed into Lincoln as a model designation for 1959 with the Lincoln Continental Mark IV, and the Mark V of 1960 remained in the Lincoln fold. After that the “Mark” nomenclature remained dormant until 1968 when Continental—again a marque of its own—introduced a personal coupe christened the Mark III, an unusual move that effectively disowned all Marks built between 1958 and 1960. Although subsequent Marks would again be branded as Lincolns, they would progress otherwise unmolested from Roman numeral IV to VIII. (Click image to enlarge)

The Mark LT borrows styling cues from the Lincoln Navigator, but its close kinship with the Ford F-150 remains evident.  (Click image to enlarge)

The Lincoln Mark LT—sans numeric suffix—represents the first use of the “Mark” name for a pickup, and indeed Lincoln is touting the Mark as the first luxury pickup ever produced. This is something of a semantics game considering its own recently departed Blackwood and Cadillac’s Escalade EXT; however, unlike those two vehicles, which were designed as lifestyle-oriented offshoots of SUVs, the Mark is a purpose-built pickup. Lincoln views the Mark’s close relationship to the ultra-rugged Ford F-150 as an asset and stresses that the Mark LT can do anything an F-150 can—only more comfortably and with more style. Available in both two- and four-wheel drive, the Mark has a 5.4-liter V-8 producing 300 hp. Exterior styling along the lines of the Navigator sets the Mark LT apart from the Ford, but the interior truly differentiates the Mark from its country cousin. Lincoln has a lock on superior interior design among domestic SUVs, and it is likely that the dominance will continue. Look for the Mark LT at dealerships in early 2005.
