Arizona Biltmore Winemaker Dinners
Prohibition did not prevent jazz age
guests of the Arizona Biltmore from enjoying the desert resort. They amused
themselves by day with perfectly legal games of lawn chess and croquet, but at
night they slipped into the hotel’s “mystery room” for bootleg liquor hidden
within a false bookcase. Though visitors to the Biltmore still indulge in
outdoor pursuits—especially golf—they no longer have to drink on the sly. And
among the resort’s prime attractions is a winemaker dinner series held at its
signature Wright’s restaurant that openly celebrates the grape.
Winemaker dinners are held monthly at Wright’s restaurant.
(Click on image to enlarge.)Held once each month from September to May, the series highlights prominent vineyards in California, Washington, and France. Menus designed specifically to complement selected vintages include four to six courses, depending on the number of wines that are served. A representative of the featured winery—often the winemaker or the owner—guides guests through the epicurean journey, answering questions and leading discussions. An ultraluxe car—such as a Rolls-Royce or Aston Martin—is displayed on the lawn during each evening to provide visual stimulus.
The series enters its 17th year in fall 2006, but you need not wait until next season to participate; five dinners remain in the current group. In February, for instance, master sommelier Damon Ornowski will host a dinner focused on Bollinger and Chanson; Porsche will be the featured marque. The season’s final dinner, meanwhile, will showcase Chimney Rock and automobiles from each of the previous eight dinners. For the current season, dinners may be purchased individually for $135 per person; the $1,080 season ticket includes all nine dinners and an additional, private wine reception.
