MARK A. SMITH RUBICON TRAIL ADVENTURE
I have written before of my 4x4 epiphany on the Rubicon Trail a few years
ago–how a few days at the helm of a Jeep transformed off-roading from an
activity I had never found appealing into one I crave. I should emphasize that
trips organized by manufacturers such as my host Jeep–with off-road experts, a
full support staff, and catering–are something akin to a well-outfitted African
safari; everyone roughs it, but in style. This sort of excursion is rarely
available to the public, and when I heard that the Mark A. Smith Rubicon Trail
Adventure offers virtually the same experience that changed the way I viewed
crawling over boulders, I wanted to encourage readers who might not otherwise
venture off the pavement to give it a try. (It isn’t nearly as difficult as you
might imagine it to be, and you don’t need any experience.) The package includes
a welcome reception in Lake Tahoe, the use of a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, meals,
and the company of Native American historian Brian Hayes and geologist George
Wheeldon. A tent, sleeping bag, and pillow are provided for the night spent on
the trail. Adventures cost $1,850 per person and are scheduled on an ongoing
basis; since groups are limited in size, Smith recommends booking early.
