On the Market: Rancho Santa Fe, California
September 1, 2007
LOCATION: In the hills of Rancho Santa Fe, a quiet community
about 20 miles north of San Diego that is known for the Del Mar Race Track and
numerous equestrian estates.
HISTORY: The property was purchased five years ago by designer
Amy Finley and her husband. After two-and-a-half years of design and
construction, the home was completed in December. "Originally, we were planning
on an Italian-style home, which is common for the neighborhood, but a trip to
Mexico City inspired me to go in another direction," explains Finley.
STATS: The home’s two exterior stucco colors, flat roofs and
indoor/outdoor living areas were influenced by the works of Mexican architects
Ricardo Legorreta and Luis Barragán. Most of the 12,244-square-foot home’s
exterior walls open to the outside to take advantage of the temperate climate.
"One room has 12-foot-tall ceilings and three sets of six-foot-wide doors that
open to the backyard," says Finley. "Indoors and out, we used
three-by-three-foot limestone pavers, so the indoor and outdoor spaces are
really well integrated." The seven-bedroom home also includes a 25-seat home
theater, smart-home wiring, a 3,864-bottle wine cellar and a European kitchen
with a La Cornue stove, illuminated onyx countertops, Sub-Zero and Miele
appliances and a large skylight that provides ample natural light. Also on the
7.6-acre property are a large pool, an outdoor cabana with heated floors that
seats 50 and a 677-square-foot detached guesthouse.
WHAT SETS IT APART: "There is no aesthetic formula for this
neighborhood, but you do see a lot of the same kinds of houses," explains
Finley. "This house isn’t so far out that it looks out of place, but it is a
fresh breath of air. As soon as you pull up the driveway, you know it’s
something special."
