On the Market: Kiawah Island, South Carolina
July 1, 2007
Location: On 250 feet of
beachfront on Kiawah Island, a private community with seven golf courses, a spa,
three member clubhouses and 10 miles of calm beaches.
History: The home was designed
by architect Robert A. M. Stern for a retired Morgan-Stanley executive and his
family in 2002. "I grew up in Massachusetts and had always been a fan of Shingle
style homes—especially the homes that Stanford White did in the late 1800s,"
explains the homeowner, who asked that Stern model his design after one of
White’s historic homes. "We wanted something very traditional. And since we
lived in Paris from 2000 until 2002, we decided to have a French designer do the
interiors, which include a lot of antiques and tapestries." (Click images to enlarge)

Stats: The 9,900-square-foot
home is comprised of three stories. The first floor contains the living room,
dining room, kitchen and family room. The second floor has six bedrooms and a
study. And the third floor has an office, a gym and a second study. Taking
advantage of Kiawah’s moderate climate, Stern included a wraparound porch as
well as a swimming pool. "We wanted to spend as much time outdoors as
possible—in the warmer months, we eat three meals a day outside," says the
homeowner. A one-bedroom guesthouse is located adjacent to the 50-foot swimming
pool.
What Sets It Apart: "Most of the
beachfront homes on Kiawah have about 100 feet of ocean frontage—this one has
two-and-half-times that," says Realtor Don Rutledge. "It’s a large home, but
it’s not ostentatious. The same architect designed Kiawah’s Beach Club, and
he really understands how to design a home that’s appropriate for the
area." (Click image to enlarge)
