On the Market: Hollywood Hills
05/01/2008
LOCATION: Terraced off the winding, granite mountainside of Sunset Plaza Drive in the Hollywood Hills.HISTORY: Designer and owner Janna Levenstein took this midcentury, 5,000-square-foot estate down to its studs in spring 2006. In a matter of two years, she transformed the home into a high-tech Zen sanctuary, adding Crestron technology, a gated stainless-steel entry with fingerprint access, an indoor/outdoor movie theater and a saltwater pool, wired with an underwater sound system.
STATS: Set on a half-acre parcel with city views, the four-bedroom residence is a series of elegant, open-air squares connected by terrazzo-floored hallways, subdued with wraparound Koi ponds and a meditation lounge. The master bath features a five-foot-long rain shower and a steam room with floor-to-ceiling glass doors overlooking the moss garden. "This house has more custom details than most homes ever see," says Levenstein. "Even the rods in the 30-foot showroom closet are a custom stainless-steel design, and the shoe shelves are a bronzed glass." Throughout the home are one-of-a-kind sinks, fitted with Australian faucets and crafted from teak, resin, silicone and imported Sayan stone.
WHAT SETS IT APART: "Every space was meant to be visited," Levenstein says, referring specifically to the three-car garage, which opens into a walnut and cork wine room. "You and your guests can drive into the garage, with its travertine walls and diamond-dust floor, and choose a bottle of wine upon entering the house."
