On the Market: Great Barrier Reef, Australia
09/01/2008
LOCATION: On a Great Barrier Reef island, in a private enclave facing the Coral Sea, with views of Whitsunday Passage.BACKGROUND: The Hayman Residences—the first of their kind in Australia—were conceived when guests who had been returning to Hayman Resort for over 20 years felt so at home, they wanted to own a piece of the island. So after a careful search, architect Kerry Hill was brought on board to design a development that would least impact the land, but uphold Hayman’s standards for luxury living.
STATS: With 21 residences to choose from, buyers can select either three- or four-bedroom units, and have access to a full range of amenities, including around-the-clock food and wine, as well as all services associated with the Hayman Resort. Outdoor activities include scuba diving, sailing, deep sea fishing, and access to Hayman’s helicopter, seaplane, and cruise boats.
WHAT SETS IT APART: "We’ve got so much space to enjoy," says Diedre Bounds, director of the property. "You can find a deserted beach, but still be close enough to the resort or mainland that you don’t feel isolated." Bounds also emphasizes that each house is designed and oriented to capture the essence of island life: the breezes, views, and sunlight.
