On The Market: Stonington, Connecticut

July 1, 2005

LOCATION: Halfway between New York and Boston, on a narrow peninsula surrounded by Fisher’s Island Sound and Little Narragansett Bay. (Click image to enlarge)

HISTORY: The 7,500-square-foot home was built in 1866 by inventor Eugene Atwood, but its original Victorian facade was transformed into to its current Colonial Revival—style exterior in 1926. Julia Roberts spent some time at the residence shooting one of her first films: Mystic Pizza.

STATS: The property encompasses 1.21 acres and features multiple terraces, stone gazebos, a deepwater dock, wide wraparound porches, 10 fireplaces, a gym, elevator and a three-bay heated garage. Five of the six bedrooms offer expansive water views.

WHAT SETS IT APART: “Stonington has the feel of downtown Nantucket,” says broker Jim Michalove. “The property sits up high on water so it has as good a water view as you’re going to get. You’re also a three-minute boat ride away from sandy beaches.”
