J. Savage Gibson
On The Market: Savannah, Georgia
January 1, 2007
Location: At the end of town in
the heart of Savannah’s historic district, where most of the neighboring homes
were built between the 1790s and 1850s.

Background: The home was
originally completed in 1907 and extensively restored and renovated in 2003. A
space above the garage was converted to an office, which overlooks the
neighboring Forsyth Park, and the basement was transformed into a recreation
area with an 1,800-bottle wine cellar, 10-seat home theater, billiards room and
spa with steam room, sauna and fitness equipment.
Stats: The 14,500-square-foot
home rests on a 120-by-120-foot lot (most lots in the area are 20 by 90 feet)
and includes four floors and five bedrooms. Many of the original details remain,
including custom moldings, parquet floors, nine fireplaces and a collection of
29 handpainted murals on canvas that line the grand entrance hall. There is also
a sleeping porch on the third floor and a dining room that opens onto a veranda
and swimming pool.
What Sets It Apart: "The
property has changed hands only a couple of times since it was built, and each
owner has taken great pride in the home," says agent Cora Bett Thomas. "So many
of the home’s original appointments—which are quite exceptional, especially when
you consider when the home was built—are still intact."
