On The Market: Normandy, France
March 1, 2007
LOCATION: In the quiet countryside heights of Benerville, overlooking the coastal resort town of Deauville in Normandy.
HISTORY: The Anglo-Norman-style manor, Château Gabriel, was built in 1874 and has most recently been owned by Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé, who renovated it with the help of interior designer Jacques Grange. In addition to revamping the interior decor, the team restored the house and added modern amenities, such as a grass helipad and a four-car garage, but left much of the remaining property as gardens and natural forest. STATS: The home encompasses more than 9,000 square feet of living space on 75 acres of land. Spread over five floors, the manor includes nine bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a billiard room, offices, a summer living room, two dining rooms and staff quarters. Besides the main residence, there are three smaller homes, reserved for the estate manager, staff and guests, and a dacha with a living room, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. Heated greenhouses and gardens, home to more than 600 species of plants and flowers, are also located on the property as well as a pond, waterfall, farmhouse and stables.
WHAT SETS IT APART: "There are no neighbors," says broker Luc Seffray of Emile Garcin Real Estate. "The property is outside of the city, so it is very quiet and secluded, something hard to find around a resort town."
