On The Market: New York, New York Upper East Side
July 1, 2006
LOCATION: On the Upper East Side, near Central Park.
HISTORY:
Recently renovated by New York–based architect Caroline Sidnam, the aging
brownstone was transformed into an Arts and Crafts–style masterpiece. The new
construction utilized single-point-of-origin custom millwork so that one tree
provides the wood for an entire room, adding detail and individuality to each
space. The renovations included the relocation of the main stairway to allow for
heightened ceilings and added daylight in most of the public areas. (Click image to enlarge)
STATS:
The approximately 7,000-square-foot home, which comprises five stories, has a
front garden, five bedrooms, a library with expansive floor-to-ceiling shelves,
and a basement with a gym and a wine cellar. In addition, the dining room
features two-story windows that overlook the home’s private 600-square-foot
formal garden.

WHAT SETS IT APART: “This home has the most sophisticated
technology and security system I’ve ever seen in New York,” says Paula Del
Nunzio, sales agent and senior vice president for Brown Harris Stevens. “The
home has motion sensors, window screens hot-wired to the alarm system, nine
different security cameras, and custom bronze security gates. The combination of
the modern technology and the custom craftsmanship creates a serene but
protected environment.”
