On The Market: New York, New York
07/01/2006
LOCATION: On East 67th Street, just off Fifth Avenue in the Silk Stocking District.
HISTORY: The house is the
combination of two homes that were built in 1879 and 1905 and joined in 1920 for
then-owner Jeremiah Milbank. Its third and most recent owner, publishing
magnate Bob Guccione, purchased the estate in 1975 and spent eight years
bringing the home back to its 1920s grandeur. During that time, craftsmen were
flown in from Europe to restore the George III–era wood paneling in the library,
Carrara marble entry and staircase, and original 1920s swimming pool (one of the
few private pools in the city). (Click image to enlarge)
STATS: The 20,000-square-foot mansion has 25 rooms on seven stories, including the basement. Highlights include a wine cellar, a barbershop, his and her saunas, a gym, a ballroom with a fireplace and pine-beam ceilings, a home theater, staff quarters and a 4,000-square-foot master suite on the third floor with its own patio, lofted studio and master bath with a mosaic tiled tub.
WHAT SETS IT APART: "The house
has an amazing Roaring ’20s feel to it. It’s very F. Scott Fitzgerald," says
Realtor Lisa Simonsen. "Usually a property of this size is reserved for an
embassy or private club, but this is a single residence. It also has exposures
on three sides and 2,000 square feet of gardens and terraces, so you never feel
like you’re in a closed box." (Click image to enlarge)
