When architect Julia Morgan designed Hearst Castle in the early 1920s, she
established herself as an American master among the likes of Frank Lloyd Wright and
Greene & Greene. Morgan, who trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, also designed
Redwood Grove for San Francisco hotel heiress Margaret Stewart. The current owners have
renovated and restored the Scottish manor-style estate.
Aptly named after the towering trees that blanket the 3.5-acre property,
Redwood Grove includes a main house, a guesthouse and a carriage house for a total of 8,500
square feet of living space. “Because of its historical significance, buying a home like
this is like buying a great work of art. There are incredible architectural details, like
the supplementary rock used from the same quarry source as the original home,”
says real estate broker David Carpenter, noting the extraordinary original millwork in the
1,400-bottle wine cellar, which was handcrafted from smooth bloodwood and ebony. “And there are
great views from every angle since it’s surrounded by a protected forest.” (Click image to enlarge)
Nestled above the Eel River, which morphs into Benbow Lake when dammed each
summer, the property also includes a fruit orchard, English flower gardens, a koi pond
and five patios that are suitable for outdoor entertaining. The home, which is decorated with
artwork, custom Oriental carpets, wrought iron work and lighting fixtures, is for sale
fully furnished.
