On The Market: Grasshopper Valley, Montana
January 1, 2005
While central Montana has witnessed an influx of large-scale golf and ski
resort development, Grasshopper Valley, to the west, has successfully preserved its
rustic charm. “It’s true Montana ranch land with a lower population and big spaces,” says
real estate broker Tim Murphy. “There are no crowds and you’ll never wait in line to
ski.”

(Click image to enlarge) Encompassing more than 6,000 acres, Circle S Ranch is dotted with aspen trees, all of which are naturally irrigated by the seven creeks that flow across the property. The 11,800-square-foot main house, constructed of reclaimed barn wood from Pennsylvania, features seven bedrooms, each with its own private bath and balcony. A staircase tucked behind a pivoting bookshelf leads to a 560-bottle wine cellar and cigar room. Additionally, the house is prewired for integrated audio and DSL lines, and the media room has a retractable movie screen. “The great room has 35-foot ceilings and commanding views of four 11,000-foot-tall peaks,” Murphy adds.
Also on the site are a trout pond, a historic log cabin, a 14-stall horse barn and an indoor riding facility. “It is land where you can grow hay and raise cattle that just happens to be near great skiing,” Murphy says. Herds of elk also live on the property. If skiing is not your sport, try your hand at golf: Circle S Ranch has its own replica of Augusta National’s 18th hole.
