On The Market: Dillon, Montana

LOCATION: Beneath the 11,000-foot Lima Peaks near the Idaho border in southwest Montana. The nearest city is Bozeman, which is about a two-hour drive to the north.

HISTORY: The home was built in 1990 by noted architectural firm Voorsanger & Associates for the current owners, Leon Hirsch, the founder of U.S. Surgical, and his wife, Fanny Flecha.

STATS: The ranch encompasses nearly 7,000 acres of deeded land and more than 10,000 acres of state and Bureau of Land Management property. Included are a self-contained fish hatchery, a 200,000-square-foot indoor horse arena with 14 stalls and four private spring-fed lakes. The largest lake occupies approximately 29 acres and can be viewed from the 120-foot-long floor-to-ceiling glass window that runs alongside the living and dining areas. The main house is made from glass, copper, walnut and slate and includes seven bedrooms spread throughout its 9,880 square feet. There is also a four-bedroom caretaker’s house.

WHAT SETS IT APART: "Some people come up here and expect to see a log cabin," says broker Doug Hart. "This is far from a log cabin. There aren’t too many ranches around here with homes this exquisite. The owners were very considerate when they built the house and even refinished the nearby 7,400-foot-long jet airstrip so that it would be easier to get there."
