On The Market: Charleston, South Carolina
January 1, 2005
In the United States, few places remain where you can purchase thousands of
acres of desirable land and enjoy the assets of a nearby city. Therein lies the
attraction of Medway Plantation. “It’s the queen of Southern plantations,” says real estate broker
Helen Geer. “You can just feel the history when you walk through it.”
Built in 1686, the estate is listed on the National Register of Historic
Places, and it boasts South Carolina’s oldest masonry. In its long history, the plantation
has been for sale on only one other occasion. “Its 6,700 acres are protected by easements
so the property can never be subdivided for sale,” Geer says.
A double row of oak trees lines the road leading to the 6,200-square-foot,
slate-roofed main house that is paneled with cypress throughout. Other living spaces on the
property include four guesthouses, three staff houses and a log cabin with two guest suites,
as well as a greenhouse, an artist’s studio, a furniture workshop and a laundry house with
a cedar-lined walk-in closet. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the property’s 13 lakes, the
12-stall horse stable and racetrack, and the expansive gardens. The estate, with a boat
landing on the Back River, is a one-hour ride by water or a 40-minute drive from Charleston, and
is a 25-minute drive from the airport. (Click image to enlarge)
Medway Plantation is fully staffed with a land manager and woodsman,
gardeners and house staff, some of whom remember when a visiting Bing Crosby sang “White
Christmas” to them in the kitchen.
