On The Market: Aspen, Colorado

03/01/2007

LOCATION: On Aspen’s Red Mountain, overlooking the city.

HISTORY: When architect Chad Oppenheim stayed on the property a year ago, he immediately saw its potential as someone’s dream home. “A friend of mine owned the house and invited me and my wife to stay there one winter,” says the Miami-based Oppenheim, who is known for his cutting-edge condominiums. “I’ve been visiting Aspen for years, and these are the best views I’ve come across.” Oppenheim is keeping the original footprint of the house, which he says had great bones but needed to be tweaked. The home is slated for completion by the end of 2007. (Click image to enlarge)

STATS: Nestled on a one-acre site, the 7,500-square-foot home combines local stone, reclaimed barn siding and expansive glass windows for taking in the views. Interiors include six bedrooms, a library, a wine cellar, an in-house spa, a home theater, an entertainment area with a game room, two living rooms (one on the main level for entertaining and one on the upper level for the family) and a large dining room, all outfitted in rich, dark woods and mixtures of marble, onyx, sandstone and granite. Outside, a stream and waterfall flow into a natural-rock swimming pool.

WHAT SETS IT APART: “A lot of the houses in the area fall into the generic mountain chalet category,” says Oppenheim. “They’re very imposing. I wanted this home to disappear into its surroundings—the most phenomenal thing in Aspen is the environment, and I didn’t want anything to detract from that.”
