“I  was interested in photography but I wanted to be somewhere like National Geographic,” says photographer Jock Pottle of his professional genesis in the 1970s. “But my roommate, who worked for I.M. Pei, started bringing architectural models home and asking me to shoot them.” It turned out that Pottle enjoyed working with the models and being inside. “Outside, there are variables like traffic and weather,” he says. “I like more control.”

In his New York studio he manipulates light and atmosphere to portray architectural models in a way that helps his clients understand precisely how their completed projects will look. Pottle, who documented models for Richard Meier’s new Jubilee Church in Rome, says that his favorite projects are museums. “Usually I do towers, and you’ve got this long vertical shape against the blue sky,” he says. “If I’m shooting museums, I have long, horizontal rectangles and can create more depth. Photography is all about creating depth.” Pottle has a quick reply when asked if there is someone with whom he would especially enjoy working. “I’d like to shoot something for Frank Gehry,” he says of the architect responsible for the recently completed Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Mr. Gehry—or any other interested parties—may reach Pottle through Esto Photographics.
