Great Machines: Watches: Sebring Special

Christian Gulliksen

June 1, 2006

Since 1952, the 12-hour endurance race at Sebring has tested both the skills of top drivers and the performance of their machines. In the 1950s and ’60s, legendary drivers such as Stirling Moss, Juan Manuel Fangio, Phil Hill, and Dan Gurney piloted racecars—usually a Ferrari—to overall victories. The 1970s and ’80s belonged to Porsche, and the 1990s were almost evenly split between Nissan and Ferrari. The Audi R8 emerged as the overall winner in 2000 and its string of six consecutive wins nearly matched the record seven first-place finishes of the Porsche 935; the R8’s successor, the R10, continued Audi’s dominance of the race with an overall win at the Sebring this March.

To celebrate the 12 Hours of Sebring, JeanRichard has created a limited edition of its TV Screen Chronoscope watch. (The watch takes its name from the unique shape of its case: a square with rounded edges that is reminiscent of original TV screens.) JeanRichard will produce 100 examples with black dials and 100 with silver dials, all with cases of stainless steel and black calf straps accented by white stitching. “It’s going to appeal to someone who appreciates a product only a few people will own,” says Ron Jackson, president of JeanRichard North America. “And because it commemorates Sebring, it’s a chance for those connected to the race to have a special memento.” Due to the limited availability of the $4,250 watches, Sebring fans should visit a JeanRichard shop soon.
