Glovebox: Mille Seconds
August 1, 2007
Karl-Friedrich Scheufele,
copresident of Chopard, takes a hands-on approach to corporate partnerships.
This year, Scheufele not only drove with Jacky Ickx in the 80th anniversary of
the Mille Miglia, but—as a sponsor of the historic Italian road race—his company
created limited editions of the Mille Miglia Gran Turismo XL, which feature distinctively racy components. A map of the course—from Brescia to Ferrara to
Roma and back to Brescia—is stamped in bas-relief on the back, an iconic "1000
Miglia" labeled red arrow appears on the dial, and a red-tipped second hand
counts down the time trials with a mechanical self-winding COSC-certified
chronograph movement. To save room on the oversized face, which is filled with
large sub-dials, Chopard laser- etched twelve and six o’clock Arabic numerals
beneath the sapphire crystal. Limited to 500 pieces, Ref. 161268 ($16,990) has a
white dial, 18-carat rose gold case and crocodile leather strap, but Ref. 168489
($6,240)—limited to 2,007—is sportier with its steel case, slate-colored dial
and rubber strap patterned after vintage Dunlop tire treads.
