At Your Service: Reclaimed Elegance

Kelly Thacher

March 1, 2008

When Thomas Sancic started tearing down barns and factory buildings that were beyond repair, he sold the recovered wood to big distributors. Sancic soon realized he could turn the raw timber into building materials and purchased a sawmill—thus Olde Wood Limited was born.

Sancic, owner and president, and vice president Kris Young readily found that they could capitalize on their Midwestern location, the public’s interest in the materials, and the environmental benefits of their venture. "We’ve found a real niche," says Young. "Everyone wants to go green; everyone wants recycled material." The catch has been to educate clients about the misperceptions of the industry—"salvaged" does not always mean "green." Olde Wood makes a point of steering clients toward eco-friendly materials, and can refer like-minded interior designers and cabinetmakers to homeowners.

This emphasis is exactly what motivated David Nicora of Cleveland, who installed Olde Wood’s antique oak flooring on the entire lower level of his home. "I chose the product because it’s environmentally conscious—you don’t have to cut down any trees," says Nicora. "We also wanted to patronize a local business." He adds that his easy rapport with Young, and the fact that they delivered the material almost three weeks ahead of schedule didn’t hurt. "The quality of the manufacturing process and the service speaks for itself," Nicora says.
