Design Seen: Bronze on Bronze
November 3, 2003
For nearly a century, Charles of Paris has been producing its line of luxury lighting in gleaming bronze, which resists corrosion and is suitable for casting and handcrafting. "The light that the lamps cast down creates a brilliant, yet warm and soft reflective lighting," says K. Burch, senior merchandise manager for accessories at Baker Knapp & Tubbs. Charles is still a family-owned company, and has just released two new lamps. Corail ($3,600) artfully reproduces the golden tendrils of ocean coral, while Byblos ($3,690) is an interpretation of palm leaves from ancient papyrus plants (right). Designed by Chrystiane Charles, both lamps are handmade with detailed carvings and gilded touches, and both also feature bronze bases and brass shades to create that signature mellow glow. "It looks like a golden ray coming out of the lamp," Burch says.
