Vintage CellarsVintage Cellars
According to Gene Walder of Vintage Cellars, wine cellars are getting bigger. “There has been huge growth in the number of bottles the average collector is keeping,” he says. “They need more space for storage.” But there’s another reason for the extra square feet. Wine cellars have been transformed from dark, musty rooms to beautifully furnished areas for social gatherings. The room pictured at the left, for instance, is only a portion of a two-story cellar. Much like the formerly utilitarian kitchen, it’s not unusual for parties to start in the cellar before moving into the living or dining rooms. Walder says that designing cellars is a highly specialized process. “Our philosophy,” he says, “is to pick a client’s brain and design a cellar to suit his collection.” A basic cellar for between 600 and 1,000 bottles can be outfitted with cabinets and a cooling system for approximately $10,000. (Subcontractors perform other work, such as wiring and plumbing, at an additional cost.) Most of Vintage Cellars’ commissions, however, fall between $25,000 and $50,000, and the price can go much higher—the final tally on a current Denver project will be $250,000.
