Ehrich & Ehrich: They are landscape architects first and pool designers second. Based in New Jersey and Palm Beach, Ehrich & Ehrich serve a diverse, often urbane clientele, and evoke their clients’ histories: pools and ponds, formal gardens, water features and sculptures that summon up places from Versailles to Agra. $1 million to $15 million. 732.329.3888, www.ehrichandehrich.com

Gib-San Pool: For over 40 years, the Canadian-based Gib-San has followed a three-pronged approach to what they call "dream backyards": quality, health and safety, and respect for the ecosystem. The world’s first ISO-certified pool company (which regulates international industry standards) has crafted pools from St. Kitts to Dubai using energy-efficient smart pumps, plaster and natural stone. Starting at $60,000 for a pool; $250,000 for a full landscape package. 416.749.4361, www.gibsanpools.com

HoldenWater: HoldenWater’s full-service offerings in-clude landscape architecture and contracting, and they make everything from pools to ponds to entire water parks. They fold their knowledge of art history and architecture into the designs—water, they say, is a tool for artistic expression. Spanish and Mission re-creations and pools in historical context are their specialties. Starting around $200,000. 714.626.0333, www.waterarchitecture.com

Questar Pools: Skip Phillips, in the pool business since 1975, has been called the most influential pool designer worldwide. He creates his aquatic environments to fit both with the natural surroundings and the architecture that shares them. Known for his signature complex mechanical maneuvers and vanishing border pools, Phillips has earned the nickname "Mr. Negative Edge." Design only starts at $4,000. 760.751.2507, www.questarpools.com

David Tisherman’s Visuals: David Tisherman is to pools as Frank Lloyd Wright is to buildings—a visionary as much as a designer and engineer. Some of his creations look as though they have always lived in their chosen spot; others have become conversation pieces. With offices on both coasts, he incorporates everything from a home’s facade to its views to create his concepts; projects range from a millpond with a waterwheel to a red plastered pool inspired by Mexican architecture. $75,000 to more than $2 million. 310.379.6700, www.tisherman.com
