"Tim helped us get over our fear of antiques," Elaine says with
a laugh. Nearly all the furniture in the house was either purchased at
auction or found by Corrigan on his monthly trips to Europe. The fireplace
mantel in the living room is from Italy, and the 19th-century carpet is from
India. "Surprisingly, the value of these items far exceeds what we paid for
them," she says. "If we purchased reproductions of the same pieces, they would
easily be double in price and would lose their value the minute they left
the showroom floor. We now have pieces that we love, which are also sound
investments. All the up-holstery is custommade, because with a house full
of kids, we wanted everything to be comfortable, livable and
kid-friendly."
Although the catalyst for this redesign was a home theater
system in this roomy retreat, the Maltzmans’ trust in Corrigan’s talents allowed
them to completely reconfigure, furnish and landscape their dream home, which
continues to give them joy. Even though they recently returned from a month in
Europe, they still prefer their Beverly Hills villa. Says David, "Why go
anywhere when we have the best of Italy and California right here?"
