Blue Clay Fitness found its genesis in the 60 pounds an overweight Andy Clay ­wanted to lose. He and his friend Rick Hagaman—both veterans of the fitness industry—designed a successful training regimen that returned him to peak condition without relying on extreme dieting or excessive workouts. Soon thereafter, the duo decided to provide one-on-one training services based on their slow-and-steady principles.

Together they earned an impressive array of Los Angeles–area clients, many of whom began requesting advice on designing home gyms. Clay and Hagaman saw this as a natural extension of their work, and they now offer design services as well. Hagaman emphasizes the practical nature of a private gym. “Our clients are high achievers and can’t spare the three hours needed for a round-trip journey to the gym,” he says. “Instead, they can spend an hour in the gym at home and get right back to work or to the family.” (Click image to enlarge)

Blue Clay starts by discussing fitness goals with the whole family. “We want to create a center that’s used by the entire family,” says Hagaman. “If a son plays football or a daughter is a swimmer, we can provide sport-specific equipment.” The partners also take any past injuries into account. “With anyone who is close to 40, there’s always something,” he adds. User-friendliness also plays a critical role in a gym’s design. “We create a flow to the workout by grouping and labeling equipment,” he explains. “We try to make it simple so that when we’re not there, clients can train themselves without feeling lost.” Depending on specifications, a gym designed by Blue Clay Fitness can cost $500,000 or more. Blue Clay client Linda Thompson—a former Miss Tennessee—designed the gym shown here with input from Clay and Hagaman. “Linda operates at a high fitness level, and she created an elite health club experience in her home,” says Hagaman. “It has the best equipment available for complete full-body workouts, as well as a sauna, a whirlpool, and audio/video systems.”
