Events: Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance
February 1, 2005
The first Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance was held in 1992 at a Southern California soccer field–like Pebble Beach, it started as a local show. But as the event gained popularity, it moved to swankier digs: first to the Ocean Trails Golf Club and then to its permanent home at the Rolling Hills Country Club. (Organizers and attendees agree that the new venue is well suited for this gathering of fine prewar and postwar automobiles.) This September will mark the event’s 13th annual showing.
Last year, more than 200 cars competed in 21 classes, including British and
Italian sports cars, Horseless Carriage, American and European open and closed
classics, and the latest addition, a non-judged category: Restored Chassis.
Attendees can expect a similarly eclectic display on the fairways this year.
The fun will actually start the day before the concours, with the 5th annual
Tour d’Epicure Road Rallye through the hills of the Palos Verdes peninsula. Open
to both the exhibitors and the general public, it is limited to 150 automobiles.
(Early reservations are recommended.) While notably less zany than the scenario
in It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, the Rallye is an entertaining scavenger hunt
that concludes with a luncheon at Rolling Hills (those traveling in open cars
should remember sunscreen). Proceeds from the concours benefit the Palos Verdes
Art Center’s community outreach programs. (Click image to enlarge)Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance
