Audi R8 2007

January 1, 2007

Having won a string of 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance races and a bunch of American Le Mans sports car races, it’s ironic that Audi doesn’t have an actual sports car in its lineup yet. But stay tuned, because Audi is about to drop its R8 bombshell—based on the Audi Le Mans Quattro concept car seen at the Frankfurt Auto Show—on the global car market, and it promises to make quite a bang. This all-aluminum, mid-engined coupe is powered by a longitudinally mounted, direct-injection bi-turbo V-10 that kicks out 610-horsepower at 6800 rpm. A hefty supply of torque (553 ft lbs between 1,750 and 5,800 rpm) goes to all four wheels via a 6-speed sequential gearbox, and lofts the R8 to 60 mph in well under four seconds. The trip to 120 mph takes only 10.8 seconds, and you can expect high levels of grip and handling to accompany the experience. Magnetically variable shock-absorber valving promises a tolerable ride.
