Spyker D12 2007
January 1, 2007
Named for the Spyker that finished second in a fabled cross-continental 1907 race, the D12 Peking-to-Paris is a four-wheel-drive, four-door fastback that Spyker believes merits its own category: SSUV, or Super Sports Utility Vehicle. Like the Porsche Cayenne, the D12 adapts sports car design with varying degrees of success and packs serious heat under the hood. Using a 500 hp variant of the Volkswagen Group’s twin-turbocharged W12 engine, the D12 accelerates to 60 mph in a claimed 5 seconds and will storm on to a top speed of 183 mph. Spyker holds the D12 to a relatively svelte 4,000 pounds with a lightweight aluminum space frame and aluminum body panels, which Spyker says are nearly as dent-resistant as their steel counterparts. When it goes on sale at the end of 2007, the D12 Peking-to-Paris will carry a price tag of approximately $287,500.
