Porsche Cayenne Turbo S 2007
January 1, 2007
Until the introduction of the Porsche Cayenne, there was precious little sport in the sport-utility-vehicle category. But the range-topping Cayenne Turbo changed all of that with a 450 hp engine and handling capabilities on a par with many sport sedans.
This year Porsche decided to go one better with the Cayenne Turbo S. The German automaker tweaked the turbocharged 4.5-liter V-8 to produce a stunning 520 hp—more than a Corvette Z06 or a Dodge Viper—enough to propel the heavy SUV to 60 mph in a scant 4.8 seconds. The Cayenne’s higher center of gravity and weight naturally prevent it from taking on sports cars in head-to-head competition, but in day-to-day driving the Turbo S delivers virtually the same performance with the added bonus of four doors and a roomy cargo bay. The Turbo S enhances on-road prowess with 20-inch wheels and upgraded brakes. And those concerned about an SUV’s stability needn’t worry—Porsche’s active suspension management system ensures control even under extreme avoidance maneuvers.
