BMW X5 4.8i 2007
January 1, 2007
When BMW entered the SUV market with the X5, it brought a decidedly athletic edge to the category. The first-generation model appealed to those who liked their utility with plenty of sport. Despite the X5’s avoirdupois and high center of gravity, it managed to approximate the performance characteristics of a sport sedan. A redesign for 2007—the X5’s first significant makeover—continues that sporting tradition. The top-of-the-line X5 4.8i uses a 350 hp V-8 engine mated to a new 6-speed Steptronic transmission, and BMW says that this will be the first time that active steering—which varies the response according to conditions—will be offered in an all-wheel-drive vehicle. The car can be ordered with wheels up to 20 inches in diameter. The previous model’s interior was considered by some to be overly snug, but the new X5’s roomier cabin makes space for optional third-row seating. An available four-zone climate control system is designed to keep all seven passengers comfortable.
