BMW Hydrogen 7 2007
January 1, 2007
BMW has been demonstrating hydrogen-powered vehicles at its
"Technik Tag" technical expositions for decades. Finally, it looks as if the
company is getting close to an actual production version. It is planning to
release a new luxury-class hybrid based on the BMW 7 series—a vehicle sure to
be a talking point at every black-tie soiree. The Hydrogen 7 is to be powered by
a 260 hp 12-cylinder engine and will be the world’s first hydrogen-drive luxury
performance automobile. At the touch of a button, the driver can switch from the
hydrogen power mode to conventional premium gasoline, making the lack of a
hydrogen-refueling infrastructure no excuse to leave the car at home. This
future model does not have a release date yet, but you may catch a glimpse of
one if you live in a metropolitan area, since a few select evaluation vehicles
will grace American roads in 2007. If BMW can pull this off without any
technical hitches (don’t mention the Hindenburg), then we may see the Hydro-gen
7 in its 2008 production lineup.
