Great Machines: Motorcycles: The Missing Link

Chris Sharp

June 1, 2007

Just because Bombardier’s Can-Am Spyder ($15,000) resembles a science-fiction film prop does not make it the stuff of fantasy. The front looks similar to an ATV—with two 165/65R14 tires connected to a double A-arm front suspension—but a rear swing arm holds a single 225/50R15 tire to give the vehicle a Y-shaped footprint, combining a motorcycle’s performance and agility with an automobile’s stability.

The Spyder’s slim frame provides a low center of gravity, and a stability system that includes anti-lock brakes and traction control further enhances handling—turning any canyon road into an exhilarating experience. A 990 cc, liquid cooled V-twin engine routes 106 hp and 77 ft lbs of torque to the rear wheel via a sequential manual or an optional electronic 5-speed semi-automatic gearbox ($1,500). The Spyder comes with a long list of standard equipment, but there are also a few additional goodies, including optional wheels, windshields, a racing exhaust, and two color schemes—yellow or silver. The Can-Am Spyder will be available in the U.S. this fall.
