Great Gear: Ciao, Bella!
February 1, 2005
To celebrate the reintroduction of the Vespa PX to the United States after a
20-year absence, manufacturer Piaggio is producing a special run of 500 numbered
Vespa PX 150 Serie Americas. Each of the limited-edition scooters is finished in
a vintage green hue and sports a plaque with its number. The PX is the most
widely sold Vespa in history, and more than 2 million of them have been built
during the model’s 27 years in production. A single-cylinder two-stroke engine,
linked to a 4-speed transmission with a handlebar-mounted gearshift, can take
the PX 150 to a maximum speed of 56 mph. Most riders, however, use the scooter
as a fashionable and convenient transport around town. (Comedian Eddie Izzard
has a marvelous riff on the Italian scooters in his HBO special Dress to Kill.)
The special-edition PX 150 Serie America sells for $4,299.
