Great Machines: GEM Electric Car
June 2, 2004
A Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) that has long been a
favorite at universities and in planned communities, the GEM—built by a
subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler—is available in a number of configurations
including two-seaters, which are priced from $7,000, to four-seaters, which
start at $9,000. Its open design makes for easy entry and exit while running
errands, and it can be driven anywhere LSV regulations allow. Options include a
maintenance-free battery, custom wheels, a wide variety of carriers for
everything from groceries to golf clubs, and canvas doors for driving in
inclement weather. However you outfit yours, a GEM is a pleasant way to get
around in areas with low speed limits. (Click image to enlarge)
