Porsche 911 Turbo 2007
January 1, 2007
When the 911 Turbo burst on the scene as a 1975 model, it established a precedent for outrageous looks and performance that Porsche then escalated with each successive edition. The sixth-generation model, based on the latest type 997 version of the 911, bounds ahead of its 996-based predecessor. More-aggressive bodywork features wide rear fenders and an array of gaping air intakes in the nose and sides. Besides cooling the engine and brakes, these also feed variable vane twin turbochargers that boost the 3.6-liter engine’s output to an unprecedented 480 horsepower. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and Porsche Traction Management (PTM) help the all-wheel drive system put the power down so effectively that this is the first turbo model to go from zero to 60 mph in under 4 seconds during factory tests. Setting another precedent, the automatic version accelerates quicker than the manual model. An optional Sport Chrono package allows brief turbo overboost to produce 45 pound-feet more torque for added passing thrust from 2,100 to 4,000 rpm.
