Aston Martin Rapide 2007
January 1, 2007
You should have seen the expression on the faces of the folks from Porsche when Aston Martin unveiled the Rapide concept at the Detroit auto show in January. Some could be seen hurrying over to the Aston Martin stand to get a closer look, and they were aghast. You see, Porsche had anticipated that its four-door Panamera would be the first of the super sedans to hit the highway, but here was Aston Martin showing a four-door prototype, and hinting that its luxury sport sedan would be seen on the road before Porsche’s. Almost a stretched version of the DB9, with which it shares its VH architecture, the Rapide sits upon a longer version of the extruded-aluminum VH chassis. Rapide also has a unique new four-seat interior layout. Among the noteworthy aspects of the concept design are so-called swan-wing doors that open at an upward angle of 12 degrees so as not to scrape the curb.
