About Face: Fisker Refresher

Patrick C. Paternie

October 1, 2007

In August 2005, Fisker Coachbuild, LLC first pulled the covers off two prototypes—the Tramonto and the Latigo CS—and revealed its definition of 21st-century coachbuilding to the world. But almost two years lapsed before anyone drove the first production Latigo.

At the time of this writing, 11 Tramontos have been delivered to customers around the world, and there is a five-month waitlist for existing orders, slightly edging out the four-month wait for Latigos. "We are a small team and at the moment our focus is on launching [the Latigo]," says Fisker, "but we are always looking forward to new things and also designing for other people."

Outside endeavors include the Artega GT, a car designed for a German manufacturer that made its debut last March at the Geneva auto show. The wheels featured on the Tramonto and Latigo have also been introduced into the aftermarket, with applications for various Mercedes and BMW vehicles.

"We are also doing more than just cars," adds Fisker. The company recently designed a watch for Rosendahl in Denmark called the PCH, after the Pacific Coast Highway. It is a connoisseur-type watch, retails for $4,000, and is limited to 500 copies.

As for the future, Fisker expects the Tramonto production to end in 2008, and the Latigo sometime in 2009. He hints that the company will reveal new projects by year’s end, one of those being an environmentally friendly, premium-level four-door sports car. "Our idea is to stay in the luxury segment, not the extreme, but closer to $200,000 to $300,000, and create cars where you know when you show up at a restaurant or business meeting, nobody else there will have one like yours," he says.
