Collection Gift Guide: Third Time's the Charm

Christian Gulliksen

December 2, 2003

There have been hot rods almost as long as there have been cars, but the idea of crafting hot rods with price tags that rival those of Mercedes-Benzes and Roll-Royces has been a rather recent innovation. Almost no name is more associated with high-end hot rods than Boyd Coddington, and the recently completed Boydster III is his latest creation. “We’ve reinvented the hot rod,” he says. “We’ve married modern technology, design techniques, and state-of-the-art materials with the unmistakably elegant lines, raucous sounds, and dynamic flair of the great classic rods.” The Boydster III is designed around a ’33 and a ’34 Ford, with swept front fenders and Coddington’s trademark stainless-steel grille. The body is mounted to a Pro-Ride Boyd Coddington chassis and powered by a 351 Ford crate motor. Other components include a TPI transmission, Edelbrock carburetor, Flowmaster exhaust, and street-performance engine accessories. Goodyear tires mounted on 15-inch wheels up front and 17-inch wheels in the rear deliver the hot rod’s power to the road. A yellow-and-blue interior designed by Eric Brockmeyer complements the body’s brilliant blue paint job and features classic Coddington instrument gauges. This particular example is not for sale—it was chosen as the “giveaway car” for the Goodguys Rod and Custom Association’s 6th PPG Nationals in Columbus, Ohio, in 2004—but a hot rod just like it can be yours for around $100,000. Or, like many of Coddington’s customers, you can build whatever your imagination desires. (Click images to enlarge)
