Collection Classics: 1972 Chevrolet Corvette
April 1, 2005
For 1968, chevrolet unleashed an even more daring Sting Ray based on the aggressive lines of the Mako Shark II show car. (The name would become one word—Stingray—a year later.) The era’s new emissions-and-safety regulations did not bode well for the Corvette, however, and America’s sports car had to contend with onerous restrictions that softened both performance and styling. Once-lofty horsepower ratings experienced a precipitous plunge. By the time this coupe left the factory in 1972, its 350 cu in LT1 produced only 255 hp—in 1970 the engine had put out 370 hp. 1972 is also significant as the last year that Corvettes sported a chromed front bumper.
