Special Equipment: Great Crates

Jan Morgan

October 1, 2006

For nearly 30 years, Katech has been a leading builder of custom racing engines for professional motorsports. General Motors has been their most prominent client, succeeding in both American and international road racing by winning at every venue from Laguna Seca to Le Mans with the Corvette, Pontiac GTO, and Cadillac racing teams.

Katech quietly entered the racing and hot-rodding crate engine business in 1997, specializing in ready-to-install, modified high-performance GM small-block V-8 engines. The current product line includes high-performance street engines as well as specialized racing engines for Corvettes, Pontiac GTOs, and Cadillacs competing in SCCA, World Challenge, Rolex, and American Le Mans Series events.

Katech’s latest offering is a line of high-performance street engines for GM cars powered by the compact alloy block Gen 3 V-8. Available in sizes ranging from 5.7 liters to 7.4 liters (454 cu in), these new engines are specifically engineered to fit Corvettes, Camaros, Cadillac CTS-Vs, and hot rods, along with GM’s SUVs and pickups. Both naturally aspirated and supercharged engines are available.

Customers can incorporate additional Le Mans–winning C6R DNA to their Corvette Z06 with the Street Attack 7-liter LS7. Designed specifically for the C6 Z06, the vitamin-enriched engine will produce from 587 hp to 640 hp, depending on the requested level of modification. Each Street Attack engine benefits from technology transferred directly from the Corvette C6R racing program, ensuring power production and reliability. The LS7 receives Katech’s specially forged 11:1 compression pistons, strengthened rod bushings, improved camshaft, lightened valve-train components, and specially ported heads.

The Street Attack may be assembled from your Corvette’s current LS7 ($8,400), or built from a brand-new LS7 engine ($24,000).
