RUF R/K Coupé/Spyder Coachwork by Studiotorino 2007
January 1, 2007
When the Porsche Boxster debuted at the Detroit auto show in 1993, it looked like something out of a Hot Wheels catalog. Curvaceous rear fenders clearly were inspired by the classic 550, and sculpted lower side intakes promised to channel a tornado of cool air to the roadster’s mid-mounted engine. Alas, like most concepts, the Boxster’s pure design gave way to the realities of mass-produced sheet metal, and Porsche’s product planners never allowed the new car to tread on the 911’s hallowed high-performance turf. Ruf’s R/K Spyder and Coupe—based on the Boxster and Cayman, respectively—adhere to no such restrictions. Coachwork by Studiotorino reinstates the purity of the original design while borrowing a few more styling cues from the 550 (the paint job on the rear fenders of either car, or the buttresses on the Coupe, for examples). Best of all, a supercharged 3.8-liter engine develops up to 440 hp, sending the little Rufs squarely into 911 Turbo territory. Only 49 of each will be produced.
